table saw router extension

I want to make an extension router table on my Ridgid TS 3650. I know they make aftermarket cast iron ones like MLCS, grizzly, and Bench Dog.

Does cast iron really perform that much better than phenolic or wood as a surface?

Also, the grizzly one doesn't have the square space for an insert. It seems to just have a hole for the router. So in my mind, it seems like a better deal.

thoughts?

Maky my own out of wood or buy cast iron?

Adding an extension to your TS is a great idea and can offer extra cutting support with larger material. Consider your time & $ lifting, making a cast iron extension to fit! An extension made of wood rather than buying a cast iron piece is more economical, and could store easier, as they are usually not used too often. As for the shaper table - IMO it would take a lot of $ to redesign and fabricate that rusted shaper to become a usable router table. Before you decide, look at the many on line videos to help you design & build your own TS extensions and router tables. Be safe.

This cast iron top is 20x27" so it's a perfect fit. Thats exactly how big I was going to make mine. He sent me a pic of the underside, but I can't save it via work computers, so I'll have to post pics when I get home of the bottom.

This is the bottom. I'll be taking my router plate to the site to see if it fits well.

So I didn't get it because the hole design didn't match my Bosch 4 hole pattern, plus I didn't want to fiddle with making circular ring inserts for the top. Also, I want to add one to the right of my existing right wing. Most people replace a wing. With the 3650 the guide rails extend past the right cast iron wing. I want to take up all the guide rail space.
I decided I'll just make one. I have some 1" plywood that should do well, if not better than MDF.
Something like this
