Switching to link belt on bandsaw... does length matter?

I'm kind of new to woodworking and I picked up a Central Machinery 14" bandsaw from Harbor Freight a few days ago. It had a lot of vibration, but balancing the wheels & installing a quality blade eliminated a lot of it. I've read that link belts can also help reduce vibrations.

As these belts are rather expensive (to me anyway), I'm wondering if there would be any problems with reducing the length close to the minimum the motor adjustments slots would allow, or if I should stick with the length of the original V-belts. There is a lot of adjustment room on the motor mount with the stock V-belt, so I could reduce the length quite a bit.

I don't see a problem with this, but I may be overlooking something and thought it best to ask first.

Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.

Welcome to the forum! Add your first name to your signature line so we'll know what to call you and it will show in each post. Add your location to your profile, as well.

We do like photos so show us your shop, tools, projects, etc. whenever you're ready. What sort of woodworking are you planning or doing?

On the link belts, you're going to end up with more links than you'll need anyway. Or at least I did on the two machines on which I used link belts. But to answer your question, yes, you can use the minimum for the adjustment on the machine. It probably won't make more than two links difference but you can use whatever length will work on the bandsaw.

Thanks for the info on the belt. I couldn't see a problem with making it shorter, and I was hoping to save enough of it to use on another machine (drill press or table saw).

I'll go through the User CP and add some more info. I'll very likely be posting more, as I'm really enjoying the site.
