Reversing this old 3 hp motor

Hey all,

I've got this 240v, 3 hp motor with a start capacitor and centrifugal switch all wired up to my table saw and it only runs in a CCW direction....after tinkering with it for quite some time I did get it to run in the CW direction, but then it soon started smoking when trying out a test piece. There is no wiring diagram on the motor plate, all wires are black and I know just enough to be dangerous....Anyone know how to properly wire this thing in a CW direction? I tried to post a photo, but to no avail.

Thanks!

This will be almost impossible, but if you have an ohm meter there is a chance

You should have 4 wires mounted on the terminal board somehow mark them so you can return them to their proper locations pull them off one at time and check the resistance to the other wires, you should only get resistance to one other wire. Record you ohm readings. After you have wrung them out, reverse the two wires with the highest ohm readings and it will reverse the motor. The start windings are what determine the rotation, and they will have the highest resistance

But since you let a little of the magic smoke out it is probably shot, and you would probably be better off taking it to a motor shop, they could reverse for you, but be ready to get a different motor

Not every motor is reversible. If sounds like you need to find another motor.
