What ever you decide. All methods will work and there are a plethora of them out there. I never thought the mortise machine was a PITB but it's limited and slow. If you bought the machine, you would be able to leave it in the ready position and that would be better than having it on a drill press. I heard they were under powered but don't know from experience.
