Drill press spindle problem

I'm not sure if this is a problem or not, my drill press spindle seemed to have a slight wobble (the one I'm restoring) and I noticed when I turned it by hand there was a slight "click" in the bearing, so I bought new bearings for it.

When I took the spindle out, I wanted to check and make sure it wasn't the actual spindle so I mounted it on my lathe and set up my dial indicator to check for variance.

Is there a threshold of acceptable variance when these things spin? Right now it's showing about 5-8 thousands difference as it spins. I also tested my lathe spindle and it only had a 1-3 thou variance. I'm not sure how much of the wobble would come from the fact that the spindle isn't being supported by bearings.

If this spindle is in fact crooked then what do you recommend to straighten it? Should I just buy a new one? They're like $50 online so I'd like to exhaust all options before I pay for a new one.

I took a video.

I'd say that .005-.008" is way out of tolerance. I'd think you'd want to be within .002", but that's just off the top of my head.

Replacing the spindle would be the best answer, but maybe some careful work with a press would get it back where it belongs.

I messed around with it for a good hour with the vice and my dial indicator and got it down to .003-.004. I'm going to put the rest of the press back together and then make my decision on replacement. If I can get it usable for a little it will make it better since I've spent the better part of $1,000 this month on new toys :/

My wife will kick my ass if I order any more stuff!
