Dewalt DW734 Planer?

There is a DEWALT DW734 planer on CL in my area for $175.00. I am in the market for my first planer for my unfinished shop and this looks like a good one. Is this a good price if in decent shape? Seems so to me. I have not contacte the seller yet, it could be gone, but wanted to get some opinions.

I think so too. As long as it runs well it should be a great first planer.

The only thing I can remember reading negative about the Dewalt planers is that they are extremely loud. Other than that they are suppose to be great planers. The price sounds decent as well, as eith buying anything used, I would offer less. We all like saving money, right!!

Thanks. I left a message and will see if he still has it. 175 would be OK in my book, he says firm in the posting. I was looking at the Dewalt DW735X here http://www.factoryauthorizedoutlet.c...cts/DW735X.asp for $557.00 but that is on the high end and would keep me from getting other things I need. I would like to get a mortising machine and if I got the planer for 175 I would be able to do it.

I agree with you...I rather have a good planer and another tool with a different capablity, than just getting the Cadillac of all portable planers and going without other essentials.

Don't worry about the noise...they're all louder than he**, possibly with the exception of the Makita, which is only louder than pergatory. You're going to wear hearing protection with any of them.

Well I am checking it out in then morning and if it looks good I will buy it. I am not going to find anything better for $175. He said it runs and looks like new and there is some kind of extra digital meter on it. Not that I have any kind of set budget for this stuff put aside, but this will make it easier to get some of the other tools I want. Its funny, I was telling the wife about it, then I thought for a second that maybe I should ask her if it was OK, and she says "oh now you ask, I guess you think it is better to ask forgiveness than permission." She was kidding and supports any decisions I make, I am lucky.

Paul,

I bought a used DeWalt 733 a couple years ago for $200. It's basically the same planer as the 734 but with a 2-blade cutterhead instead of three. It's a great machine and I thought I got a good price on it. $175 for a 734 with an auxiliary thickness gauge is a great deal. Grab that thing and run with it before someone else snags it!

I know most of you all know what it looks like, but like a proud new parent, I have to show off my new baby. One less item I wanted/needed for my new shop. Plus since I got for $175.00 I am that much closer to getting my hollow chisel mortiser I have been wanting, not to mention everything else I want for my new hobby.

Paul,

Nice score! I'm sure you'll love the versatility it will add to your shop.

Let me know how that Wixey gauge works out. I've been thinking of adding one to my 733.

Hopefully this will be my last tool gloat post for this great deal, but I just had to celebrate a little more. This coming right after I checked CL tonight and see someone selling the same unit and asking 275 for theirs. Don't know if they will get it, but I am loving mine for 175 even more now. I can't wait to use it. I am off for 11 days starting Saturday and I am devoting the majority of that time finishing the clearing of my basement and getting my shop set up once and for all. Wish me luck.
