We found this, but what the heck is it? Can anyone help me identify it?

Yep, looks like a power hack saw to me too. Handy gadget to have around if you have the space for it.

what is this?

I believe that what you have is a home made cut off saw. Is the blade for metal or wood? The mkaterial is clamped in the vise while the motor moves the saw blades in a reciprocating direction.

Put in a good blade and try it out.
Wish I had one.

it is what came before the portaband saw. I dont think it is home made because my neighbor has one like it.
