12" planer recommendations

Hi,

I am in the market for a planer and was looking for opinions. I would like to stay as affordable as possible but dont want to buy a piece of either. The max i would spend would 400 but less would be better. So i am pretty open from there. Any opinions are welcomed. I am also open to reconditioned planers if anyone has opinions or info on that route.

Thanks for the advice in advance.

Got my Dewalt planer off Craigslist for $50. Put on a new belt, replaced a few missing screws and sharpened the blades. Love it.

For $400 used, you should be able to get a good planer.
I bought an old, Boice-Crane 12" planer for $150. Replaced a Powermatic lunchbox, screamer.

I have a 13" Delta, two speeds and it's done a lot of hard work. I've had it six years, get my logs cut at the saw mill and plane all the boards myself. I've had problems twice, once the rollers needed cleaning and yesterday was excessive sniping, both times I called delta's number and a tech told me what needed to be done. Works great now and didn't cost a dime to fix.
I hear the DeWalts are really nice too.

Thanks for th info so far. Does anyone have any experience buying reconditioned online? seems you can get a decent percentage off new price. Anyone have advice or warnings about that or a site they use?

Thanks
