Thank you Bigjim. I have a hewing adze. Never occurred to me that this would be considered and adze. Seems it's a coopers adze or barrel makers adze.

This is a pretty ancient tool. Humans have been using some variation on this to make things like hollowed log canoes for eons, back to the stone age.

It looks like an adz. They were an important tool generations ago, used by settlers for making logs into rough-hewn timbers.
