Rough cuts

I have a Miller Falls Miter Box 1124 that I purchased in the early 1970's which has been rarely used. A week ago I started using it again. With a 1x4 clamped tight on the bed of the saw I still get a rough cut. The saw is about 22" x 5" and is a 10 teeth per inch. Do I need a finer blade or do I have to live with sanding the ends of the boards for a smoother finish? Where would you recommend looking for a fine tooth blade? The cut is straight but rough up and down. I have even marked the board and miter box and from what I see the board does NOT move. Am I missing something?
Also on another note what beginner wood working magazine would you recommend?
Thank you.

Duane

It could be a couple different things. The saw may just be dull. The saw could be a little loose in the tract letting the blade wobble left and right as it's cutting.

you need a shooting board

A shooting board uses no bullets, but does use a hand plane:

I like Wood Magazine if I had to pick one for basic woodworking.

The answer to your question will only be as detailed and specific as the question is detailed and specific. Good questions also include a sketch or a photo that illustrates your issue. (:< D)

My money is on a dull saw. If you don't have it, there's a copy of the manual available here: http://www.badaxetoolworks.com/pdf/MFLA_MiterBox.pdf
