$ limit on old stanley

what's the highest $$ you'd spend on a vintage, already resurfaced or smoothed out stanley #5 jack plane, the 14"ish variety

My personal limit is $50 for any plane, maximum. Lower if I have to do work to it.

Measure 6 times, cut 3. Plane it down wrong and go buy a second board.

Depends on the plane, condition, what's in my wallet, etc., but I'd spend upwards of $60 if the stars aligned just right.

is there a time frame to avoid? Some are 1920s, others 40s, etc
