Fulton 5324 Double Ended Block Plane

It is very rare for me to restore a plane and end up with a “shelf queen”, but this Fulton 5324 Double Ended Block plane will probably see very little use. Double ended block planes were produced by many plane manufacturers and were virtually unchanged from the late 1800’s until they mostly disappeared in the mid 1900’s. The lack of adjustment places them at a disadvantage to most other block planes. I prefer to store my planes with the cutting edge retracted to protect the bevel. Fettling this plane every time I want to use it is much slower without a cutting iron adjustment screw. Unless I have need of the bull nose feature of this plane, there are many other block planes in my collection I would reach for before this one. Nonetheless, it is a beautiful example of a double ended block plane and will remain in my collection, to be taken out and used on occasion, just because.
