I recently bought a Stanley No. 78 brace and some auger bits to go with it. My current project calls for a 1" auger bit, however, this doesn't fit in my brace.
It seems like the jaws don't open up enough to accept the tang and as such, I can't properly tighten it.
Is my brace too small or is there something amiss with the jaws? Any guidance would be greatly appreciated!
There was some wood caught in the jaws which I cleared out, with a bit of force I can now get the bit in the jaws good and proper but it's a pain to get back out again. Looks like my next weekend project will be a full restoration on my brace, the nickel plating in that video looks like it'd be fun to try!
Yes auger bits were numbered in 16th inchs on the tang. I think because it may have been easier to stamp it deeper into the tang for better visibility?
