I read your article about getting started on ThisisCarpentry. That's great. I have just started into woodworking and love it but making a living at it would be tough it seems. I am the same age as you. My IT job is getting tougher every day just to survive the corporate world.
I wish I could find a guy like you in Kansas City to help me finish my kitchen family room trim. It's hard to do when you're working full time. We gutted our rooms and now I am down to adding back in a door and creating all the trim. I decided to build my own design of trim rather than buy that horrible junk at Lowes or Home Depot.
