(Please note: I am not the first out of the gate on using these forums. I also posted this question in one of the public threads. Please excuse this if this is against the rules.)

I would like to replicate the finish you have created on this beautiful mission bench. My project is to refinished a modern style solid oak bed frame that is about 40 years old. I have stripped the old finish completely. The wood has some natural amber tones so I think it is red oak. I do not want to darken the wood more than necessary so I would not use any stain. Of course, it is hard to tell when looking at an image on a monitor, but this bench has the warm glow and soft sheen that I want my finished project to have. I am very inexperienced. Do you think I should go for pure tung oil, diluted with mineral spirits and applied in a series of thin, wiped on/wiped off coats or for Behr's tung oil finish which also contains hardeners, i.e. varnish? Thank you!

Thanks for your explanation. I appreciate it. I wish that Ridgid had let me keep my TS 3650 and just replaced that arbor instead of giving me a brand new machine. They confuse me with their logic sometimes-more often that not really. Thank you again.

    Scott,
I wanted to tell you how informative your post are about saw blades. Being in the saw blade sales and sharpening business, I tend to read post related to saw blades. You are very good at informing people which blade is good or bad for there particular need. You go into fine detail that really shows the differences between one blade from another. Keep up the good work, and if you are ever looking for a job in the saw business call me. Bill www.quinnsaw.com YouTube - Quinn Saw

    Hi Scott,
I am looking to get started with hand planes. Upon browsing the forum, seems like you are the resident plane-guru.Hoping you could guide me in the right direction. Here's what I am looking to do: I am a hobbyist. Spend about 5-10 hrs a week in my shop. While I have mostly power tools; I dont have a planer. I have been using the jointer for the time being to make do. But Its frustrating and a lot of work and dust! And I still dont get squareness sometimes!
Anyway, I wonder if had any suggestions or recommendations in thsi regard. I was hoping to start with a very basic Plane complement, but there are so many options out there (some very expensive), that it can get overwhelming. I am mostly self taught and hopefully in the near future I can make some of the workshops in RWS, but till then I need to wade through this as best as I can.OK I have been rambling on for a while. My budget- under $250 to start with and slowly add planes/sharpening systems etc over time.
    Regards
    Kaul.

Richard - I couldn't find any written info that would help with your project, but you're welcome to browse thru a few other pics that weren't posted here. Good luck and please posts pics of whatever you end up building.

Thanks Richard. The bench seat is about 17" high x 13" deep, and is about 38" wide overall. I'll dig around a bit tomorrow to see if I have any other useful info for you.

Nice looking bench. My friend have asked to build a hall bench for them and I can't find anything I really like(well until now). Anyway you can send me some dimensions of your project?

    TIA
