Hi Jock, most likely its the flatting agents in the varnish giving the varinish slight opacity/milkyness/ if you want a deep clear finish you will have to stick with gloss. Also varnish ambers over time which will affect the natural beauty also. Better to use acrylic coatings on it than ambering coatings.
