Default Tapered column?

Fellows,
I'm looking for a plan/idea on building a pair of tapered columns about 4'6" from the top of a pair of divider cabinets to the lam beam that stretches across the room. These will be approx. 5-6" base and taper to the width of the lam beam. I have most of the basic wood working equip (table saw, router, band saw, power hand tools etc). I was thinking of just using 1/4" oak vaneer and them being 4 sides, but I have no idea of how to cut the taper so it works out. Any other ideas of how you would have them look and constructuction techniques is appreciate. Thanks!
