Default Oak island plans

I am very new to woodworking but I would like to try my hand at making an island for my kitchen. My neighbour has access to some old pallets that are made out of 4x4 oak and I would like to use them for legs on the island and laminate a bunch together for the top and then rip them down and laminate them for the shelving. I am not sure how to join the legs to the shelving, would i use a dado cut on the table router and put the shelves and legs together that way? I would like some advice on how to get started and is anyone knows of any plans available it would be greatly appreciated
Thanks
