Default Building a table and need help!!

I'm building a odd shaped table and need help with the leg placement.

The back is 48"
The left side is 36"
left to right is 12" then in 12"
The rest of the front is 36"
The right side is 24"

So it's L shaped and I dont know how to negotiate the front left corner.

Hi Golficeman,

If you can you give us some details about the table, that would be more helpful for someone to properly diagnose
what type of materiial it's made of?
what kind of legs, and how you're attaching them?
any supports between the legs?

I would probably say 1 in each corner, with an extra leg for the middle of the back.........all depending.

Rick

Default Table

Rick,

It is going to be a fly tying table. I am going to make it heavy and a nice piece of furniture. ¾" plywood, with ¾" maple top. I'm using nice figured heavy maple legs for it. Hutch style on the top back 10" wide and 12" tall, in a reverse "L" from the front "L".

I'm trying to have as little bothering leg room in the front for moving my chair around , but still give support to the 12" x 12" outcrop.

Thanks,
Kevin

Kevin,
Here is an idea I came up with.

use 3/4 x 4 or 4 1/2 maple for the aprons
corner block should be 1' thick, but you can use 3/4
2 hanger bolts for each leg
knock one corner off of the legs
use nuts, washers and bolts to attach the 2 units together
the thickness of the filler piece will depend on the reveal you have with the legs
it wouldn't hurt to use corner blocks on the smaller unit where they join, though not in the picture
you can attach the top with cleats or pocket holes through the apon

This should give you plenty of room for your chair.

Let me know what you think.
Rick

Sorry Kevin.....I re-read your post and you want the additional piece to be only a square foot.

Here's another picture, more or less the same terms apply. One less leg though.

Hope that helps.

Default table

Rick,

Yes this looks like it will work. I had about everything the same, except didn't know about the 5th leg placement, and 5 is all I have. Starting on it on Monday. I appreciate your help and knowledge!!

Thanks,
Kevin

I'll post my picks when I'm done!

No 5th leg. It will get in your way. And with a double thick top, you can move the front left leg 6" straight rearward to also get that leg out of the way of your knees.

My desk has the typing area on the left side, my top is doubled plywood. I have my left leg as one solid end piece, from the back to 6" from the front. rock solid. And two legs will do the same as my full end piece.

I know these aren't the kind of legs you intend to use, but this gives you an idea of what it would look like.

Willie,

What does your apron look like then? (across the front)

Thanks,
Kevin

I like the double thick idea of for the top...adds that 'extra' feel.
I would think for the 4 leg style, you would have to mortise and tenon that 4th leg into the apron....maybe double up on that apron as well, and/or with corner brackets. Even then, I'm not sure if I would trust it the way I described - and call it durable........but, I'm always up for learning

It's just the doubled 3/4" plywood, laminated top and edges. I only have a clear span of 35", but I don't doubt it would manage 48" very easily. Two slabs of plywood glued together is pretty solid.

The only reason I would discourage the mounting of a leg way out on the left front corner (or especially the 5th leg up front) is because, as I look down at my left leg right now, I know I would be hitting a corner-mounted leg on my own desk... and I simply sit here, typing.
