Default Building a Lectern

I am designing a lectern. One of the features is to have a height adjustment. My current thought is to have a piston like design with a smaller column fitting inside a wider one. My problem is I can't find the hardware to lock the height in place.

Does any one have any recommendations for the hardware (source and style)? Also, if anyone has built anything like this, are there any traps I should be on the lookout for?

Thanks in advance,

Stuart

I would go with the your idea of having a cylinder inside a larger one. Keeping the engineering down to a more simpler method, I would use pin and handle with holes in both the cylinders with your holes about 6 inches between each one. From there, just raise your lecturn to the height you want and plug in the pin. You could use a deocorative knob for the handle part and it would blend right in. That's a simple resolution. I'd be interested in seeing what you come up with so please post pics of your progress.

Default Find an used adjustable height office chair

You may be able to use the height adjusting piston and the locking handle. Just a thought! If not the small pistons used on pickup truck lift gates may work. If not a gravity system with a counter weight and pulley at the top may work. For a smooth sliding action I would line the innersurface with "formica" type laminate, since wood may be a little "sticky". Rockler has unusual hardware. www.rockler.com

part no 33100
Sewing Machine Lift Mechanism

Average Rating:

$159.99Each

This unit has a travel of 14 1/2" and a weight limit of 35 lbs. The lift could be adapted to use in the lectern on the back wall. Rather expensive, but would make a very reliable and professional solution.
Great Project BTW, show us step by step results. bill

I thought about the hole and pin method (about 1.5 inches apart). It is simple and relatively foolproof but was wondering if there was another solution.

If I can figure how to use Google sketch I would transfer the plans from the back of an envelope and post them for you.

I am planning to get everything settled before I make the first cut (plan the work and work the plan). I will keep the board posted on the progress.

Interestingly enough, I couldn't find anything on the Rockler website that might work. I didn't call them because I don't know what to ask for. That's probably also why I couldn't find it on the site.

Woodenthings suggested the lift mechanism from an office chair and that may work but it requires more engineering than I wanted to use in this design. It is however, an idea to keep in mind.

I do like the suggestion to line the inner surfaces with formica to reduce some of the friction.

Thanks for the advise.
