Question Walnut stain on Hard Maple

I applied an oil based Walnut stain on a Maple end table.
The legs absorbed the stain well, but the top is much lighter and blotchy.
I'm thinking of trying a Lee Valley aniline stain/dye, next.
Will I need to sand all the previous stain off to get it to absorb?

-any other suggestions??

Maple is a diffuse porous(closed grain) wood with a tendency to blotch. Dye stain is less likely to be blotchy,in any case you will have to remove the existing stain first.
