Question treatment of dry wood

I have had in storage some red heart aromatic cedar for 20 plus years it is approximately 1in thick after planing. I would like to reoil or condition the wood without sealing or varnishing it . I would appreciate any ideas that you may have to help me in this project. I plan on using this wood to panel a complete room and was going to first put up a 1/2 inch sheet of plywood for backing. I believe that nailing alone may crack the cedar I am not really sure again any suggestion would be appreciated.

Thanks

Bruce

The wood may not be dried out. Without a moisture meter to know exactly, where and how the wood was stored determines it's moisture content. The relative humidity and temperature of the ambient air where it is stored is the determining factor.

If using the wood for its aromatic properties, I wouldn't apply any finish, or oil. Surfaces of the wood can be scuffed lightly with bronze wool to "re-vitalize" the color and aroma. You could pilot hole for nails if you are concerned. If you aren't close to the end or edge, I wouldn't think it would be a problem.

Unless you have had it hermetically sealed there is no need for concern wood is hydroscopic and will adapt to its surroundings quickly.
