I may get an order for a tv stand. The customer wants the top to be black with no grain showing with the rest of it a dark grain. I'm guessing that I'll have to paint the top but do not know what I can put on the paint to ensure that it'll stand up to some abuse. Can the paint be coated with satin poly or a water based poly or something or is there something totally different that I should do. I'm obviously new to that aspect or finishing. Thanks for any replies!

I've used a water based poly over water based paint,no problem. It's been 5 years and it's holding up fine.Just rem oil to oil/water to water.
That's all I know.I'm sure you'll get more suggestions.

Your durable film finishes would be oil base polyurethane, or a two part pour on epoxy. These may appear as too plastic looking.

You could use black melamine, but it comes on a composite board and you would have to edge band with either a pvc or mica laminate, or wood/wood veneer. Melamine would not offer as much protection as Formica (mica), which is a high pressure laminate (HPL), which you could put on the substrate of your own choice. You would also have to edge that substrate.

If you use a good oil based enamel there is nothing to be gained by top coating with anything else.

Default Thank Ya Much!!

Hey all,

Thanks for the great input. I'll check and see what would be the better route for me to go. I haven't gotten the order officially yet but this will definitely help me be prepared for any quotes.
