Default School me on paint

I am a wood-working student, and I do mostly danish oil on my pieces, but I have come to the point where I need to paint a piece. I have no idea where to start, or what to go with. I just bought an HVLP gravity fed gun to paint cars.

FG,
what kind of project are you looking to paint? What kind of wood, and what kind of finish are you looking for, glossy, semi-gloss, etc.?

I would like to do a glossy finish. It's poplar stack laminated. I know a guy who uses automotive paint to paint wooden projects, but he makes it sound like it's difficult, and finicky.

I am by no means an expert but I just sprayed all my kitchen cabinets and doors and a bunch of trim with an HVLP gun I recently bought. I used an oil based primer and paint from sherwin williams thined with paint thinner. There are a lot of different types of paint products out there for different applications.

A little description of your project and what your trying to get it to look like would help others to give you advice. Or you can go talk to a real paint store, not a home depot or similar.

I've done a lot of things that I had no idea what to do. That's what life is all about.
I'm doing a sculptural piece that will hang on the wall. A round stacked lamination piece on which spiky elements will be doweled into place. it's going to be painted turqoise.

Default I've painted wood to a high gloss with lacquer

Once the base color is on, then lots of clear coats rubbed out and wet sanded with 400 in between and you can get a finish that will show your pimples/freckles
The auto body stores have a 2 part "Clear Coat" that will do the same, pricey tho, at $35.00 or so a pint. Very good gloss without rubbing and fast. The last way is a rattle can in the color you want if possible and many coats over a good sanded primer, which you should always do no matter what the top coat is. bill

I admire your attitude. I have always been bold in what I do. The mere fact that you are inquiring in front of the proper audience shows that you are not a reckless fool.
I rarely ever paint wood, so I wont be of much help to you here.

For a high gloss finish:
Same process applies anyway, primer, wet sand, primer, wet sand,
paint coat, wet sand, paint coat, x 3, wet sand, finish coat, wet sand, finish clear coat, x 3, wet sand, rub out with polishing compound. stand back look for your face in the reflection. more or less. Been there done this on wood on cars and trucks, including a Surburban, a 62 SS Chevy Impala, and a Porsce, and a few Harleys. bill

Wow, that was a really helpful and rude response all in one. Thank you all for your responses. I feel that in most woodworking and other building circles there is a lot of confusion when in it comes to materials and types of paints.
