Default sanding clear coat water based finishes

Im finishing a water based painted piece(black). Im using mw polycrylic with a brush. It's thick but dries quick. After the first coat i want to sand it and tried a test piece but sanding it produced a whitish finish that im afraid to coat over wont this show? Ive read that you can sand inbetween coats w 220 grit to get the lines out. I cant wet sand it. What am i missing? Any wisdom would be greatly appreciated.

The white should go away when you re coat. You can
wet sand if you allow enough drying time. A couple
days I think??

The white is just the clear finish you are removing. That is normal. Usually the first clear coat application will raise the wood's grain a little, almost making it feel rough. Just depends on the wood, how well you prepped and the type of clear coat used. 220 grit beteen coats is ok; however, you are not really sanding with pressure. You are just looking to lightly run the sandpadper over the surface, not to apply too much pressure to remove the finish you just put on. I normally go to a 400 grit range to sand between clear coats. I normally use a tack cloth between coats of finish because it's sticky enough to pick up the dust from the surface of the wood you created by sanding.

The best finish takes time and patience. Many light coats are much better than a few heavy coats. Depending on what clear coat I use, I often use a high speed buffer to give it a final zing to shine like a mirror. Hope this helps.
