Default Sanding

Some times after I have sanded to what I think is satisfactory I still get a dirty look in the stain.

When sanding prior to staining I usually do 150 and then drop to 220 sometimes I start with 100 depending on the project. What do all of you do?

Also how much to you all sand in between coats of finish? I usually use steal wool and on a large piece it can be a pain and hard to get all the steel wool out of all the crevices.

I do about the same, depending on what grit i need to start-and go through the progressions to 220 and sometimes 320...

I only sand W/320-wet or use Very fine steel wool between finish coats just enough to smooth my previus coat, i try to only use wipe on poly as i like the look and ease of use....

Tack rags and compressed air to get the steel wool all gone-if you dont have an AC just get a can of that dust remover air for computers...

Once in a while I'll take it to 220 but usually stop at 180.
I use either 2F or 3F pumice mixed with mineral spirits between coats, taking the top coat down to rottenstone.
Bathroom pieces and tabletops get poly, most everything else gets varnish.

I'm just kind of nutty that way.

I do have an AC and that is exactly how I clean it up. I just have to cart the peice outside.

I like to use an old wornout scotchbrite pad between coats, then I take my backpack blower to it followed with some tack cloth and I'm usually good to go.

Depending on the specie of wood, I don't usually go smoother than 180x. I don't sand after staining. In between coats of finish, I don't ever use steel wool, but rather 320x. If I use any "wool" at all it will be bronze wool, or a synthetic pad like Scotch-Brite™.

I agree with Cabinetman steel wool should never be used between layers of finish,it is an accident waiting to happen. I like the synthetic pads maroon and the finer gray.

itchy to make something I made a set of oak coasters and a holder. Figure that was something I could do quickly. I used a green sanding pad on them and it seems to work well. It did take a little more elbow grease though.
