Default reference material?

I'm relatively new to wood working... every project I do is a learning experience but I'm getting better. One of the hardest aspect of my project lately has been the finishing. I just finished a mahogany and maple coffee table, sanded it to 220, applied 2 coats of seal-a-cell and then 3 coats of arm-a-seal, buffing it with 0000 steel wool in between coats. The end finish was ok, but not great, and felt rough in spots. I just feel that the finish could be better.

I have learned that finishing is not an science it is an art. There are so many different finishes out there that I get confused and don't full understand what is the best way and how and such. Is there any good reference material out there that would be good to read?

Get Bob Flexner's book: Understanding Wood Finishing.

It's all you will ever need... and you may discover it may be more of a science than you think.

Jeff Jewitt's book "Finishing" is my bible. I've had the same trouble with mahogany (veneer) until I followed his advice on sealing followed by multiple coats of shellac. It means more elbow grease but the finish is as smooth as a baby's...
