When I refinish chairs I generally completely disassemble. After sanding and coloring I reassemble using 30 minute epoxy glue. None of this is much fun.
The last two sets of 6 chairs that I refinished were colored using TransTint wood dye and top coated with 5 thin coats of polyurethane. Using denatured alcohol to clean up excess epoxy glue worked without causing any serious issues.
For a current project I used Saman water based wood stain to provide the desired color. Then I applied 5 thin coats of oil based polyurethane before reassembling.
Well using denatured alcohol to remove excess epoxy was a bit of a disaster. There was substantial color removed causing considerable rework without the best result.
I would appreciate some feedback on what happened. I do not understand why the denatured alcohol did not bleed through the poly and cause damage to the wood dye but sure did damage to the water based wood stain.
Thank you.
Gary
