Default Opaque Stain?

I've got a couple of bookcases I'm wanting to finish, but don't necessarily want to paint them. I trimmed a house for a builder who said he used an "opaque stain." It looked almost like if you had a super thick stain, it was dark by the way, that didn't really show any grain unless it was in the light. But these bookcases I'm wanting to stain are oak and i'm not real sure how it would look. I personally like seeing the grain, but my wife, in one of her finer moments, isn't sure if she likes it or not. I'd just paint them, but I'm not a huge fan of painted oak. If I'm going to paint, i'd rather have used a smooth wood or MDF, but I seem to end up with too much free oak ply and solid to not use...haha.
