Default Oak stained black

I have a kitchen with only one window so it is pretty dark in there.

The kitchen was remodeled some time ago and "they" stained the beautiful oak cabinets black. Not dark brown, black.

What is the fastest and/or most inexpensive way to fix the problem. I am loath to paint the cabinets but I am afraid that painting them is the only reasonable fix.

Thanks ... viki

I agree painting would be easier and faster than most other ways. The next alternative might be chemical stripper and probably bleach after.

If you don't mind the work, you can sand them. You will still have the black in the grain, but it may look pretty good. If you have an inconspicuous place to experiment, give a try to see how it looks.
