Question Need help picking out paint for hvlp

Hello everyone, I'm new to the forum and looking to get a little help from some veterans. Mainly my business is remodeling and custom carpentry but I've slowly been getting into cabinetry. Along with the cabinetry comes finishes and I'm trying to teach myslef to spray. I recently purchased a devillbiss Cvi trans tech pressure feed. I have the setup but I just have no idea when it comes to choosing paints. I have some peices that I've built for myslef that I would like to spray. I'm looking just to do a simple off white with a clear. The gun is stainless so I can spray solvent or waterbased but I would like to do waterbase as it is less toxic. Can anyone recommend a certain type of paint and how to tint or thin if needed.

I've got a Campbell and Hausfeld (spelling?) and can spray just about anything. I've learned that the gun sprays better when the paint or poly is really thinned down to almost water. I just spray several thin coats to keep from running. When I use water based paint, the grain raises a little and I use very fine sandpaper between the first few coats to keep smooth. Anyway, hope this helps.

I also have the CVi gun. When I do spray water base paints (I much prefer alkyd), I thin with distilled water because I'm on a well and don't want to find out if hard or softened water will affect the paint.

I've also read that Floetrol will work as a thinner.

I don't have a hard and fast ratio of thinner to paint; just thin until the paint goes through the gun easily. I also use the TransTech needle and air cap, as it is larger than the HVLP.

Remember to always use a filter when filling the cup.

Always use a high quality paint--- you get what you pay for.
