Default A Maple gunstock

Good evening. I am new to the forum and am in need of a lot of help.
I have a gunstock that I scratch built out of Maple.( it was the only wood available)
I would like to stain it a dark oak or light walnut.
The normal gunstock stain I have used in the past is no longer sold ( had alcohol in it and requires haz-mat to ship)
Is there a stain I can home make that will work on the very close grained maple?
Someone on one of the gun sites suggested Ritt dye and alcohol but I am unsure of it and do not want to start over from scratch.
Any help would be appreciated.
