Default Magnalac sheen question

Hello,

I normally use Campbell's Magnalac Semi-gloss for my wood finishing.

Is the white stuff that settles in the bottom of the can the flattening agent to reduce gloss?

The reason I ask is that I have to make a cabinet for someone which requires a satin finish. If I buy a gallon of satin Magnalac and want to mix the leftover lacquer with my semi gloss, will reducing the amount of "white stuff" in the can of satin make for a glossier finish?

Thanks

ML Campbell's Tech Support phone number is 800-364-1359. I think you are right in what you're saying, but some of the white stuff could also be a bonding chemical as there is also white stuff in Gloss sheen lacquer.... Let us know what you find out.

I submitted a question through their online form and here is the answer:

Settlements at bottom of cans are not only flattening agents but they can also include other resins important to the overall drying and curing of the coating. therefore it is not recommended to separate the liquid like that.
Ah well...no such luck...

Generally the white stuff on the bottom is Talc, that's what gives it a lower sheen. If you want to use up left over products, it would be best to put the left over semi-gloss on first then finish with a satin. It's not good to build up too many coats of a low sheen. The clear can become cloudy due to the build up of cleer. So it's best to put a higher sheen on first then your finish lower sheen on last.
