Default If you want to spray

go to a real paint store like Sherwin Williams and get a good quality lacquer. Ask for something that is furniture quality and not just cabinet grade.
I use Sherwin Williams Pre-Catalyzed lacquer. The stuff is bulletproof and feels like the surface has been waxed.
The downside is that it only comes in 5 Gal cans and has a 6 month life span in the can and a wholesale price is about $140 for the 5 gal. Even if you only use half of it, it is well worth the money.
When I buy it, I buy empty 1 gal cans in a local hardware store for $1 each and pour it all into 1 gal cans.
Maybe you can get someone to split it with you.

Brushing lacquer is basically the same as spray, except it has retarder in it. Depending on the brand, some lacquers are recommended to be thinned 50%, and others could be sold ready to spray out of the can.

You will likely have to thin brushing lacquer to spray. You'll have to see the consistency of the brand.
