Default finishing table top

I got this kitchen table from walmart a few years back. It was stained and had a wax finish. It was getting pretty nasty just from every day use, so I took my orbital sander and went to town. I only sanded down the table top. I then applied (I think it was minwax) paste wax as the finish. I tried to polish it up as much as I could. I've noticed in the last few weeks that it is getting white marks, the kind that you see when you are not using a coaster on your coffee table! I am just wondering if I didn't put enough wax on or if I used the wrong type of wax. In the realm of finishing I haven't a lot of experience. Tips, comments, corrections, downright nasty expletives anyone?

Default Here's a link for applying a wax finish

Knowing how is now not the issue. What is is, (Bill Clinton's Definition) whether this is a good solution for your application. It's not water proof or durable and will require frequent recoats. But that's up to you. Think about what the types of finishes are: carnuba wax, bee's wax, boiled oil, vege oil, mineral oil, shellac, varnish, spar, water and poly based, lacquer, 2 part epoxy or clear coat, and...maybe I left one out? Each has it's advantages and down side. Maybe it's time to reconsider and use another type of finish? bill
BTW there are a whole lot of different waxes:http://www.thefurnitureconnoisseur.c...duct_list&c=51
This one is for table tops: http://www.thefurnitureconnoisseur.c...t_detail&p=719
How about bee's wax?:http://www.ehow.com/how_2202683_appl...ax-finish.html
There's a oil wax combo:http://www.afmsafecoat.com/downloads...0data%2008.pdf
