Default finishing kitchen table

Im finishing my kitchen table, I have sanded the table stained it and now about to put several coats of polyuratain on it. my question is:
Seeing as its my kitching table and the family will be eating off it, do I need to put anything on the polyuratain?
I also finished the wood chairs and am done with the topcoats on them, I tried a Briwax on them and didnt really notice a difference though it was hell to buff out..
Thanks for the help

All I've read on WW magazines says that all the finishes when fully cured are perfectly safe if that's what you are concerned about.

I always like to finish my projects with a couple of coats of past wax; just because I like the feeling of it, nothing else.

I don't know what you are trying to achieve with the wax, but once dry if you plan to use a polyurethane (either oil base or water base), nothing else is needed. Using a wax will preclude you to adding more finish, or create more work when you wish to refinish. I use finishes that don't require the client to do maintenance if possible. I use wax on my automobiles.

I agree with Fbranco - based on reading I've done, from sources I trust.... all finishes, once fully cured, are safe. Some products use marketing to point out their product is food safe, most don't. This gives the consumer the perception that some are not safe.
Prior to some time in the '70's when lead was banned from everything, this was more of a concern.
