I used Behlen neutral wood filler on red oak then stained with ACE red mahogony. The filler caused a white to come through hiding the grain pattern where it filled the best. Rather than throwing away a quart of grain filler can I add dyes to it? Tried adding some of the red mahogony to it, that just turned it purple and thinned it out to much. The endtables are in my photos, although you cant see the tops. No filler on the rest.
I have used wood filler and found similar problems. Then I took a wood working class and they use liquid epoxy which you can get from Lee Valley, you can use it either clear or add a paint dye to it to match the wood colour. The advantage is you can finish over it and you will not get any blotching or discolouration around the area you apply the epoxy.
Thanks fellas, I also found out there are multiple colored woodfillers I could get at Woodsmith. Going to get a stock of dyes for these situations. I like the looks of it without the filler, but wanted the real smooth top. More layers of poly would probably get the same affect also, might take a bunch with oak though. Wouldn't using epoxy block the stain if you used it as a filler?
