Smile canadian birch finish help

Hi guys: I'm remodeling a closet using Canadian birch plywood, however this is my first project ever and I need some advise. I was wondering if I could get some sugestions on a tutorial to do a finish. I have spend quiet a bit of money on this project and is coming out nice, I would hate to ruin it by messing up on the finish. I read that a tug oil finish is the easiest with good results. Can anyone confirm this and where I could find a tutorial on how to apply it.

Thanks

Hi CB, Tung oil gives a nice finnish and is easy to apply. First there are different types. I have used Formby`s (pricey) with very good results. And Hpoes with not so good...but it was 100 percent tung oil. I prefer oils that have varnish mixed in...this will help drying time. I use cheese cloth...a little goes a long way. Don`t flood the wood...just rub it in! For a large area...use a 3" brush. Allow to dry over night. Very lightly sand with 220 apply another coat...let dry. Wattco is also good. Linseed is user friendly. Rick

you can stain the wood (I prefer dyes) to the color you want then rub in a mix of 1/3 boiled linseed oil, 1/3 mineral spirits and 1/3 poly (whatever gloss you want, I like satin). just mix them equal parts, use a rag to rub in each coat, steel wool it between coats once you get a build up. let it dry for a day between coats. no runs with this finish and uber-easy to apply. you can replace the linseed oil with tung oil. i suggest going with at least three coats of finish. the formby's tung oil is kind of a pork and beans thing - maybe just enough tung oil in it to give it that name, the rest is other additives. I've used it and was pleased with it, but, i've also used the mix. if you stain it, ensure you use an oil based stain.

Formby's tung oil finish is a thin wiping varnish made with alkd resin and soya oil. If this to be enclosed at all, Do not use any oil based products in an enclosed area- the odor with be there almost forever and will affect what ever is stored in it. I will never understand the mystique about tung oil. It is a little less amber than BLO, when used to make varnish a little more resistant to water vapor and much more expensive. Any oil by its self is not a good finish for most things.

Guys, thanks for the sugestions. However Jerry you cought my attention about the smell in the enclose space. Since this is going to be a closet then of course I'm concern about the smell. If not tung oil, then what other easy technic available. Initially I was planing to use a stain and then a polyuritain finish but I'm afraid the results would be poor. Any sugestions would be greatly appreciated, I just never done this and I'm at a lost on how to complete this project.

Thanks

If it were me I would use shellac, but water borne acrylic would also work.
