Unhappy black stain on bare cherry

I was edge gluing some cherry lumber to cherry plywood and cleaning the glue joint with water and a paper towel and it was not coming off so I used a wet 0000 steel wool pad. The next morning I had all black blotty spots where I cleaned. Does anyone know how to slavage this piece? It's a lot of money to burn? Thank you.

use some oxcilic acid bleach, also known as deck brightner, the stain is a result of the steel wool,or best known as an iron stain, same as old wood with nails..hosehold bleach will not do....follow the insturctions, several light applications are better than one heavy,if it lightens the wood surrounding, usually a light sanding will restore, if not wipe the entire panel with a light solution to blend the color of the wood, when its done wipe it down with a 50/50 mix of water and white vinegar to neutrilize the bleach,it will usually also have some white chrystals on the surface when dry...again a light sanding with some 200 of finer will remove and resmooth the surface ....good luck

Default Great advice from Charles

and an excellent opportunity to provide good followup. The lesson here is to avoid steel wool at all costs. A better product is the synthetic from 3m marketted as Scotch Brite.
