Red Oak Ne bowl

This red oak NE bowl is 6 1/2" X 3 1/2" high. Has 12 coats of min wax spray poly. Just playing with new modes of finish. Like the finish overall except the bark has way too much gloss. Good fun though..Bill..

Very nice bowl and nice form . The finish on the bark might be a little heavy but it still looks good. Did you have any problem keeping the bark on ?

I never turned a NE bowl so I am no authority on this so are you saying it is better to turn a NE in mid winter when the sap is down than to turn it in mid summer when the sap is up ?

If you cut the tree down during the winter the sap is down. As the weather warms and the tree starts to come back the sap is rising. When the sap is present in a more concentrated form the bark will usually go flying off. I use CA glue all around the bark edge unless I KNOW it was cut durning the cold months..Hope this helps when you go for your NE bowl! ..Bill..
