Default peppermills sizes

So I now that the ability to make peppermills, from what I have read I should use a blank 2.5-3" in width. However the price for a solid 3x3 blank runs alot more then a 2x2 or even a 2.5x2.5. I know I can segment it to make them larger..... but I like the solid piece option...

So I guess my question how tall can you make a peppermill with a 2.5" square base and still have it be stable? (When I make a 24" mill I'll use a 3" base for sure )

Also, for those that sell them, what is the most popular sizes for peppermills (and salt mills)

Hey Dv,
I have made quite a few different sizes. Just for the record, the 24" one I made started out just over 4" x 4". That thing probably weighs about 20#. You will lose a little diameter just by truing it up. So a 2 1/2" blank is most likely going to end up closer to 2 1/4" by the time you are done. I wouldn't go over 10" in height on those. My early ones were that size and they looked ok. I like a 3 x 3 blank for 10 - 14" . Gives it a bit more heft and less likely to fall over. Glue some blanks up. The nice thing about the laminated ones are you are normally using kiln dried stock to movement, cracks, and shrinkage are not a problem. Plus the color combinations are endless.
