My first goblet - Woodworking Talk

It's 6" tall, 3.5" dia. out of silver maple. These things are fun.

A lot nicer than my first goblet. Mine looked more like something a Viking would drink out of. It was a little thick and sturdy looking.

Slatron,
Look very nice. I like the spalting. For the next one, try adding a captive ring on the stem. Always a nice conversation piece when people look at them. They can't figure out how it got there. I usually tell them I have a wood welder that does it.

I am sure you found out how you have to do most of your work in the right order when doing the goblets. Hard to go back once you remove most of the supportive material. Lotsa fun,

Tim, I am brand new at wood turning. With the exception of a couple of ornaments in a woodturning class, I haven't turned anything. I hope that is the quality of turning I can do on my lathe if I ever get to use it. That is one awesome, awesome piece of work. Outstanding. But I have a silly question. How did you go about turning that? Did you turn a tenon on the base , then turn the whole cup and part it off or did you turn the cup end the turn it around and put that end in the chuck and finish the bottom? Again, that's a great looking gobblet.

jporter, I don't even own a chuck yet. I turned a cylinder between centers and then mounted it to a face plate. Start with the cup and work your way down from there. As Mike said, you have to do things in a certain order. There's a couple of great articles over at woodturning online. Those are what gave me the confidence to even try one.

Thanks Tim for sharing. I don't own a chuck either, been looking at them. I never thought of the face plate. That I did get with my lathe. Again very nice.
