Before I cut off the tenon. What do you think?

Btw, it's silver maple and cherry.

Slats,
You cut make a lid and a finial for it and still cut off the tenon now. The lid's a separate piece anyway. Turn the underside of the lid and get it to fit the hole in the top of your vessel. Then flip it around and do the topside and make provisions for the finial if it is going to be a separate piece.
