Jeep,
never used mine to hold liquid. I would think you would want something that builds up a good film finish that is impervious to water damage. I would try a polyurethane finish (oil-based). Follow the instructions, 2-3 coats, should hold up fine. Keep out of the dishwasher.

I make Beer mugs and I use Salad Bowl Finish with 4 to 5 coats. And I let it fully cure before using it.
I'm presently finishing one with epoxy...but it's a pain to control the flow so it taking a few days to get a full coat around the mug.

The end grain will be the most difficult to make waterproof as it will absorb the finish. I use a few extra coats on the end grain before applying the final coat,
