Default Intro and looking for some advice

I am from southeast Texas. Hot, humid and friendly only to living wood. I am a hobbyist and I use that term loosely.

I find myself in need of a band saw and am looking for advice. I need to cut hardwoods up to a max of 2.5-3" thick. Use will be infrequent-an hour a week maybe. I just can't get by with my jigsaw on some of the thicker pieces. I was hoping I could get away with a 9" table top model, but the few reviews I have been able to find routinely poo-poo these as not being able to cut a straight line or a curved line nor do they last very long.

Unfortunately I also have a rather limited budget so cost is very much a factor. I would appreciate any advice on type, size and brand of band saw - and why you like it - for something in the $150-$200 range.

Also, just as an addendum - can all band saws cut metal if the right blade is used or is there a minimum power level needed. Think 1/2" aluminum plate and lightweight pipe.

Many thanks!

Check craigslist. Thats where I got all my stuff there except my band saw and I regret buying it new.
