Default Sketchup shuts down my computer

I am brand new to SU. I downloaded it and installed it. Then I used it a little just to see what it was all about. I went back 2 weeks later, and when I chose a template, it shut my computer down. I thought it was a fluke, so I tried a few more time with the same result. So, I went out to the website and downlaoded a newer version. Same problem. What am I doing wrong? Do I need to be connected to the internet when I use it?

Hmm haven't heard pf that before. No, you don't have to be online. I will do some research. What OS and hardware are you operating? What template are you selecting?

Sounds like a hardware issue to me. Have you tried running other graphics heavy programs lately and had problems? I wonder if it has to do with you graphics card?

Sketchup is probably trying to tell you to get off the computer and into your shop. [/smartass]

It's important that you divulge what your computer specs are, and what exact operating system you are using.

that would be my guess also. i had issues with an old pc that would constantly lockup and reboot itself. replaced the video card and it decreased dramatically. still did it every once in a while - i think the CPU was overheating =/

On the desktop icon where you open up SketchUp, RIGHT click it, and open PROPERTIES. Click on the COMPATABILITY tab. Check the box "Run this program under compatibility mode for:..................." Then pick "Windows 2000" from the dropdown menu. Finally, click on APPLY, then OK. This works sometimes.

Bud, I've had a few issues with sketchup locking up my machine and I've had to force kill it. It happens most often for me when importing parts from the web...

If I were you, I'd get as much detail about what else is running, your operating system, and similar information and send it to Google in a bug report.

My guess is that there is a conflict between the video drivers or a Microsoft patch. Try updating your video drivers first then if that doesn't work check microsoft patches. If you are behind of a few, go ahead and update them.
