OK I have a weird one. I'm following along with CWW's tuts, and I'm at the part where I define the Aprons with the Entity Info. I've set all the Aprons to be part of the "Apron" layer, yet when I click on the Legs layer checkbox, all of it disappears. I rechecked the Entity Info: sure enough, the Aprons are on the Apron layer... but they aren't!!

Any ideas? I've tried this three times now.

Edit: Again... posting before trying EVERYTHING :)

I had to delete the Legs layer, then redo it all. No clue why, but it worked.

I am guessing that you have primitives of the Aprons spread across multiple layers. Select an apron, right click and choose Edit Component (I assume you made them components). Inside the edit bounding box click three times on a layer to select all primitives. Look in the Layers box to see what layer they are on. It should be Layer0, but I suspect you will find an empty yellow box indicating that you have multiple layers involved. Us the drop down box to choose Layer0, then exit the edit mode. Now select the Apron component again and place it on the Aprons layer.

When you are drawing you should always have Layer0 active (the radio button next to Layer0 should be selected). Never draw with one of the other layers active. Place components (or groups if you must) on other layers. But all primitives wan to be on Layer0.

If this is confusing contact me via email and I will help out. Go to the Contacts page on my website for my email address.

I took this afternoon and completed part 4 of Joe's Intermediate Tutorial. I have to say the tutorials are excellent and I highly recommend them. I learned a lot from them and from Joe. I certainly will recommend them to my model ship mates and woodworking friends.

Default Newbie

Hello to all, new guy here looking for some advice/help. I just downloaded the Sketchup 7 program off of Google and would like to start learning how to use the program. I'm dowloading all the tutorials I found on the sketchup website now, but all the files are saving to my desktop and I was wondering where I need to put the files in order to use them. I apologize if this question has already been asked and answered, but I'm currently in Iraq and my connection isnt the fastest in the world so I just wanted to post it in hopes of getting a response quicker than waiting for each thread page to load. Like I said, I'm in Iraq so I have plenty of time to learn how to use it (hopefully anyway, from what I did on the few pages I was able to see several people said it's not too difficult), so any tips would be greatly appreciative. I've been out of practice for a while as far as woodworking is concerned, and would really like to get back into it, so again, feel free to take me back to school. Thanks yall

chiefholdem,

You can put the files in any folder you choose in your "My Documents" folder. You can actually run them from your desktop, but I don't recommend that. When you have viewed those tutorials you might want visit my Google SketchUp page (http://www.srww.com/google-sketchup.htm) and look at my beginners tutorials. They take you from no experience to drawing a bedside table with dovetailed drawer to texturing it and making shop drawings with dimensions.

In model info under units the template for woodworking is set to fractional and precision to 1/64. Is this 2.00 +- 1/64?

yes I do believe that to be the case in fractional and arch dims. Decimal and engineering format is to a 1/1,000,000 as you probably know.

I agree. But make sure you un-check "Enable length snapping".

Default printing to scale

When I print a top view I get a to scale line drawing (black & white) but when I print a front view I get a to scale line drawing but in color, with shading and background color. I switched to wire frame mode but it still prints the SketchUp background color. Is there away to print a line drawing with out using any color?

Don,

When you say it prints in color, do you mean the color that appears in your model? If so change your style to one that has no background colors (or whose background colors are white).

By the way, what does your handle don9of11 mean? Is it your position in your siblings? I am joe11of12.

Thanks Joe, I'll look in the preferences and see if I can change the background color. And, yes Don9of11 is my position among my bothers and sister. (10 boys and 1 girl) I am number 9. It also has a Star Trek connotation; if any one here recalls 7of9 from Star Trek Voyager series, I went with designation because I belong to a few other forums in addition to Woodworking and wanted a new unique name.

Gotta love those big families. My family was 9 boys and three girls. We use to joke we had enough for a baseball team and our own officials.

Default some what distracting

As you rotate an object in SketchUp and then stop, SketchUp gives the edge lines of your model a kind of heavier look - a bolded look. This to me is very distracting and I hope I explained it adequately. It doesn't matter if you are in wire frame mode or X-ray mode. Is there a setting that controls this? It's irritating me to no end!

---

I found it. Under View>Edge Style>Profile. I just unchecked this option and now I feel better.

Don,

I think you are seeing Depth Cue and it may be set too heavy. Go to Windows/Styles and bring up the styles box. Choose the Edit tabe and see if Depth cue is check and the value to its right. Either lessen the value or uncheck it to disable it.

By the way Don, you may want to experiment with the Profiles setting too.

Is sketchup robust enough to use for drawing up garage plans. I want to add a garage to the hous eand I don't need super detailed plans for the builder, but I do need several views and a 3D rendering. I have not used it and don't want to spend a lot of time if it is not up to the task.

Sketchup is up to the task if you are. This is a project I built and then modified with a new side entrance later. You may find the program easy or not. Personally I think it's great. I use it nearly every day for projects from buildings to woodwork or designs for furniture, machinery or other fabrication.
