Default Sketchup Questions?

If anyone has any Sketchup questions, please feel free to shoot away.

I love the program and will do my best to answer your question as thorough as I can and I might even give you a tutorial.

There are a couple, which one are you asking about in particular?

I am putting together a cd/dvd of tutorials together for construction/woodworkers, but it is taking quite a bit longer to do. Until then, here is a great resource:

Thats what I like to hear. Give me some information on working with it.

I'm interested.

BTW- Beautiful place you live in sir. I am going to come up and go fly-fishing for trout/salmon in the Bristol Bay area if they do not pollute it with mine waste. I am a fly fishing fanatic.

'Design. Click. Build' Blog - Fine Woodworking

here is another link, if you havent been there. One of the authors is Dave Richards. He also tutors sketchup. I have no idea about your level of experience in sketchup. I assume you are pretty versed in the finer points. I know I had to change the way I did things to make my models cutlist ready. Dave (DaveR)would be more than willing and better able to answer any questions you have about the cutlist...as would Steve (daltxguy) at Lumberjocks.
Did you get the application downloaded and installed ok?
You might also read some of Dave's blog here about some sketchup/cutlist issues and questions people have.

Dave's SketchUp Blather #1: #1 Cabinet Components mics_54 - by DaveR | LumberJocks.com :: woodworking community

DaveR is also the instructor at the woodworking and sketchup classes in Port Townsend, WA. that I posted earlier.

AND I guess you've read this SU Blog article on timberframing Official Google SketchUp Blog: Search results for timberframe

Not to ignore your comment about alaska. yeah it is a great fishin spot. I've never been over that way (bristol bay) but I live near the kenai and there are so many great places to fish. I'm not sure whats happening with pebble but I don't think its going to be the big threat to bristol the way some make it out to be. It's all politics.

I will take a look at the links you provided, thank you.

I just noticed you are originally from Sand Springs, OK. I am just wrapping up a big design/build remodel in Tulsa.

I love this program: (I am about 65% done with details, but you get the idea of what I can do with this program)

I would love to see what other guys are doing with SU.

Running on a Mac. This is functional. Only the html output window for the layout does not work because of issues with the Safari browser, however, there is a workaround using the SVG export.
I guess they had some issues with Mac but I think they are getting the issues worked out.

read the cutlist blog for details

Sketchup works great on Mac.

Okay, here's my question. How can I get Sketchup to work on CentOS 5.2?

My main pet peeve is this program hasn't been ported to Linux yet...

Cole,
I'm curious whether you find Sketch-Up to be powerful enough to do a full set of house plans, including work drawings to supply to the contractors?

I know there are some firms out there using SU for everything. I have done it on small jobs, for instance a 2 car garage I designed and built for a client, all the CD's and elevations were directly from SU. But on most of my work I use it for a quick sketch of my ideas and then I export it into ArchiCAD which even lets me add even more detail. Right now I think you will not find a better package out there.

Here is what I am talking about in a swf movie:
Macromedia Flash (SWF) Movie Created by Camtasia Studio 2

The only downside is the $5k cost of ArchiCAD.

Cole, The Aidan Chopra vids are very good. I recommend them to any one seeking to learn SU. I Use Turbocad V14 and export to DXF or DWG files and open in SU. Then Turbocad will open SKP files. Both have great support.

I have a question,

First project in SU was my workshop. In the second image , maybe not real clear, the table isn't attached to the floor. I'm not sure how I get an item to lock onto the floor surface. When trying to move anything it can really get screwy and will even move outside the "structure". It takes a while to reposition from several views to even get it close. Any suggestions?

Worth mentioning, I haven't read many how-to's, just playing with it for now.

Can anyone tell me where I can down load SU and is it free?
