Default sketchup is AMAZING !

I"ve only been beating on it for a few hours and have already managed to do a drawing that I could not have imagined being able to do a few hours ago.

This took a while to do but it's hard to say just how long, because a lot of the time was spent on side trips checking out various capacilities of sketchup.

Nice job. I've got to find some time to check that software out. Hardly hear any bad reviews on it.

I'm an old guy and when I was growing up the word "awesome" actually meant "awe inspiring", not "approximately 3% above average" as it seems to today. Sketchup is awesome.

It IS quite complicated when you really dig in but the great news is that you can do wonderful stuff w/ the simple features and learn the complex stuff as you poke around.

By the way, thanks for fixing my post so the pic shows. How did you do that? What did I miss? I even read the sticky post on putting up pics but couldn't get it. Advice?

Thanks,

Paul

First you have to get the images on your computer somewhere. Are you doing that? Once you have them on your computer wherever, click the Manage Attachments button (you must be in Advanced Mode not the Quick Reply Mode), and you'll upload the images using that interface; the interface pops up in a new window.

Once you have uploaded the image/s using the interface, the software saves those images to your forum clipboard so to speak. You could actually close the interface if you wanted by "x"ing it out and you would still have the images saved on your clipboard. You can also leave the interface open in case you realize you want to upload another picture as you craft your post. You can upload up to 5 images per post I believe. Maybe it is 3 now but it used to be 5 Ithink. Whatever - there is a limit but you can always turn right around and make another contiuation post below your own and place 3 or 5 more whatever the limit is.

Now that you have them to the clipboard, to actually place them in your post, you'll notice a paper clip icon at the top of the toolbar. When you click that, it will show the image codes on your clipboard and you can insert them one at a time (if you have more than one) or choose the "Insert All" and they will all be attached into your text window. make sure before you drop the paper clip icon menu down, you place a cursor in your text window where you want the image to go. You can place it between text etc. They will not show up as images yet but to see them before you post to make sure you have them in the order you want, just click the Preview.

This does not place the images in your Gallery, that's a different process. I rarely bother with that for some reason. Also, make sure you have re-zised and compressed the images to be within the forum limits (each type of file has its own limits and they are given to you in a table in the interface).

This all sounds complicated but like anything, once you start doing it, it will fall into place as you go. Best thing to do is to just carve out about 30 minutes to practice.

It looks like you're picking up sketchup pretty quickly. There is a lot it can do. It's just a matter of learning how. Do you have any previous cad experience?

No, but I'm in engineering so familiar w/ CAD concepts and I'm very computer literate (I do it for a living). The more I poke around in sketchup the more impressed I am w/the capabilities. This morning I learned how to do a "spindle turning" in a few minutes, with coves and beads and so forth, and was just amazed at how easy it is. Simple example:

Size: 10.5 KB

Thanks TT for the lucid directions ... no problem putting up the images now.

Paul
