Default lock 'drawing plane' ?

I am familiar with AutoCAD and SolidWorks, but have never really played with SketchUp. This morning I was trying to make something simple, but ran into a problem about not being able to 'lock' the plane you are drawing on, e.g. if I start drawing on a surface, then I would like to lock that as the current plane (USC in AutoCAD or sketch plane in SW).
This will make it easier to create new components which are sketched using other components lines and points as reference.

Is there an easy way to do this ?

I'm fairly new to sketchup myself, and have not seen any way to do what you want, but there are these things called "inferences" that make it pretty easy to keep things where you want them relative to other objects.
